Impact and Relationship: A Workshop
Spring 2008 in Oakland
Led by Cal Simone
It is frequently said that many of us don’t know much about relationship.
How can we participate in relationships that honor us, honor the other person, and honor the relationship? And what really goes on between people in a charged interaction?
Do you:
- Find relationships challenging?
- Have difficulty dealing with family or work situations?
- Feel misunderstood by the people in your life?
- Not understand why others react to you as they do?
- Want to be better equipped to express yourself?
If your answer to any of these is “Yes,” join us for this full-day workshop.
This is an opportunity to sit with others and hear their perspectives. Bring your struggles, your curiosity, and your wisdom. You can work with any relationship, including those with significant others, family members, co-workers, friends, and yourself.
For most of us, our primary model for relationship is how our parents related to each other and to us when we were children. Sadly, our educational system and culture doesn’t teach us how to relate to others and to ourselves in even the most basic ways.
Relationships consist of dynamics between two (or more) parties. When something is “up” for one person, something is also going on in the other. In this workshop, we will look at the effect of our impact and to practice strategies in the face of another’s impact. We will explore the dynamics of how each interaction is co-created by both participants in the relationship. Beyond our own accountability, we will begin to work the relationship from both sides — for both people, not just one of them. And we will play with the energy patterns that underlie relationships.
Using a variety of methods and techniques, you will have the opportunity to learn and practice:
- Staying present and focusing your attention
- Listening to others more fully
- Effectively and appropriately sharing feelings and desires
- Exploring the effect of your impact and dealing with the impact others have on you
- Giving and receiving feedback in ways that honor yourself and your relationships
- Being aware of and managing your energy
You will take with you simple tools and a personalized practice that you can begin using immediately in your relationships.
This workshop is valuable for men and women of any sexual orientation, and people of all races and backgrounds are welcome.
